Time of mushrooms and fungi in Sepúlveda

Time of mushrooms and fungi in Sepúlveda

The hills, fields and forests surrounding the village of Sepúlveda are transformed every fall.  Everything seems to be “re-painted”, “re-illuminated” and “re-perfumed”.   Ochres emerge by surprise, saturating in the autumn sun; the ground “expires” with the scent of truffle, juniper and rosemary.  It is the last “ breath ” of nature before winter takes over.

If the temperature, and accumulated humidity, have been adequate, hundreds of mushrooms and fungi proliferate in the area (Montes de Segovia).  From October to December, baskets and sticks tour the numerous fields in the area of Sepúlveda.   It is a magnificent opportunity to get to know the area and enjoy a wonderful walk in the countryside.

In the area there are innumerable varieties of mushrooms and fungi but perhaps the most obvious and safe options for the beginners are the oyster mushrooms (“pleurotus eryngii”), the boletus (“boletus edulis”) and the chanterelles (“lactarius deliciius” ).  Their harvesting in the area is easy and abundant (ensuring a memorable day not only for the beauty of the landscape, but also for the success of the harvest).

We recommend obtaining a harvesting license either online (at www.micocyl.es) or at the office of the Diputación de Segovia.
