Little shoes of the Virgin

Little shoes of the Virgin

One of the most curious plants of Sepulveda is known as “zapatitos de la Virgen” (or “little shoes of Virgin Mary”). It is a plant belonging to the poppy family -the family of the papaveraceae-. Small and delicate, it lives in the old limestone walls of the Villa (of Sepúlveda). It forms delicate cushions with white and pink flowers for a few days. Sepúlveda is adorned every spring (traditionally the month of the Virgin Mary in Spain) by flowers that seem to sprout “miraculously” from the stone.

The appearance of the “Zapatitos de la Virgen” is a much awaited event by the inhabitants of Sepúlveda and visitors, who enjoy the ephemeral beauty of these flowers. This natural spectacle adds a touch of magic to the streets and corners of the village, enhancing its historical and picturesque charm.

In addition to their aesthetic value, the “Zapatitos de la Virgen” have a significant ecological importance. Growing in the fissures of limestone, they contribute to local biodiversity and serve as indicators of the health of the urban ecosystem. Their ability to thrive in a seemingly inhospitable environment is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of nature.

Popular legend also attributes mystical properties to this plant. Its flowering is said to bring good luck and that observing its delicate flowers is an omen of prosperity for the coming year. This belief adds a cultural and spiritual dimension to the fascination of the “Zapatitos de la Virgen”.
